** FILE ** A Girl Scout, wearing her vest covered in badges, ... more >Two Massachusetts men were arrested on charges stemming from a $400 cookie theft attempt from Girl Scouts doing business outside a Northampton store on Tuesday.
Police report Nicholas Taverna, 22, of Greenfield, and Cassidy Michalski, 25, of Deerfield, approached the outdoor cookie operation and made a grab for the girls’ cash box. A supervising adult tried to intervene and suffered a broken nose and injuries in the ensuing fray. Authorities were able to apprehend the men; they were charged with unarmed robbery, assault and battery and shoplifting, and held pending $5,000 bail, according to the Associated Press.
Shortly after investigating, authorities tied the suspects to an earlier cellphone theft at the Walmart in Northampton. Police painted the scene: The suspects allegedly stole two cellphones, tried to trade them for illegal drugs in Holyoke, but failing that, returned to the site of the Girl Scout’s Northampton cookie sale and went for the cash box.
No Girl Scouts were reported injured in the incident.
